Hey look—Twitter did an ad!

(via Mashable) Update: idea stolen from xkcd?
And a timely, laughing-at-the-earthquake ad! Does this signal that the cute-as-a-button microblogging site is going to finally start spending some big, heavy, dirty ad cash? Hire me freelance, Biz! I'll give you 10 ideas better than this one, cheap! Note: the star of the video is Twitter software engineer Danny Hertz.

Excluding the central quake sound effects, I was mostly taken by the overall three part background tracks, the soothing piano intro followed abruptly at the 0.12 mark by the dramatic and startling Law & Order 'doink doink*' tone, concluding with what sounded like some cheesy soundtrack from an eighties eurotrash sexplotation film.

* The music for Law & Order was composed by veteran composer Mike Post. In addition to the theme song using electric piano, guitar, and clarinet, scene changes are accompanied by a tone generated by Post.

He refers to the tone as "The Clang," while Entertainment Weekly critic Ken Tucker has referred to the sound as the "ominous chung CHUNG" and Richard Belzer as "the Dick Wolf Cash Register Sound."

The tone consists of only two notes and was generated electronically by combining six or seven different sounds to get just the right deadbolt effect. Post has noted that one of the sounds the interlude incorporates is the sound of "five hundred Japanese men stamping their feet on a wooden floor. The sound has become so associated with the Law & Order brand that it was also carried over to other series of the franchise.

This is bad, but the guy is hot. I'll blow him. And no, CR, you cannot come up with 10 ideas better than this. You cannot even come up with 5.

To be fair twitter & facebook stayed running after the big quake in March in Japan when the phones were down, and one guy on a stalled coastal train saw the tidal wave warning on his smart phone and they were able to evacuate to safety.

But earthquakes are never amusing.

So... is it a problem that this was copped straight from XKCD? Or is that just kind of okay now that we've all agreed everything is a remix. http://xkcd.com/723/

I do like the "faster than--" concept, but it is pretty poor timing.

Still, I just want to applaud them for a rare attempt at using humor and making some comment about their product at the same time.

As opposed to a commercial that says "Twitter. Better than other social networking sites for reasons we won't specify." or "Twitter. Your husband/wife/teacher/friend/cousin/dog's a tool. But I feel like we really 'get' eachother."
